1991 in TV: 60 minutes is back on top

Nice to see the return of the stalwart news show to the top of the TV ratings. I'm guessing that it was primarily the waning days of the Gulf War that had people flocking to a trusted news source, back when that kind of behaviour was considered normal.

In the episode I was able to find, there was a feature profiling Hafez Al-Assad, Syrian President, and questioning why Al-Assad was a partner to the U.S.-led coalition against Hussein when, in fact, both had equally damnable records regarding human rights.

I also watched a story on The Birmingham Six, about a group of six men accused of planting explosions for the IRA, whose stories did not lead to a convincing guilty, and whose handling by police was suspect and may have been a matter of finding convenient men to charge for the crime. The end of the segment reported that they were close to an appeal decision regarding their sentences, and in fact they were released from prison not long after the episode aired.

And Andy Rooney was grumpy about something.
