The Cosby Show, number one in 1989, takes it final victory lap

At the end of this bizarre run of catching up on five years of The Cosby Show through Facebook videos, I was pleased to find a fittingly weirdest-of-all way to watch an also fittingly weird episode from the sixth season.

The episode is called "The Day the Spores Landed," and it features Cliff dreaming of a world where a volcanic eruption has caused a worldwide phenomenon of men becoming pregnant. There are plenty of mixed metaphors to enjoy in here, but before that let me explain the video I watched.

It was from this Polish TV episode repository, and although it was dubbed in that language, the original audio wasn't replaced so the English track was still there. Since the Polish voice-over typically started a second or two after the original dialogue, I was able to catch the gist of what was being said even if I couldn't hear the whole line.

So what's the point of the episode? I really don't think there it one, except for one thought-provoking line delivered by Cosby at the end. All of the pregnant men (including Theo, Elvin, and Martin, and later in the episode Wallace Shawn) are aching, complaining, and generally brushing off the women who are trying to help, highlighted by Cliff admonishing Clair not to "tell me what to do with my body." Preach, Bill.

The men all vow to show the women that they will not give in to anguish during this process, but when the big moment comes they are all blubbering and needy as they give birth to ... stuff. A race car. A model sailboat. A hoagie and soda (guess who that was).

And the coup de grace comes as Cliff wakes up, realizes he was dreaming, and says to a sleeping Clair: "I love women. I think women are the most wonderful people on the face of this Earth."

I think this is a fine place to stop.
